learning from, and enjoying Copenhagen

introduced by Jan Christiansen…

the former city architect of Copenhagen. He held a lecture on Copenhagen’s development in the last 10 years with a special focus on the development at the waterfront. Really interesting – what a pity that Vienna has no connection to the sea…

It’s really BIG

I enjoyed this wonderful sunday afternoon at BIG’s latest project in copenhagen – 8 tallet. I had my doubts about this huge building, but what I’ve seen today definitely changed my mind. The interesting thing about it is, that it don’t feels so huge when walking around on it because it always changes its perspectives and apertures. Some flats are already inhabited, but the disposal of the flats is underway that’s why I had the chance to see some flats from inside.

for those of you who do not know this building already, take a look at this video – you may like it, even if you are not interested in architecture…

and because it’s on the way,

I had a look at these buildings as well. Most of you might know the story about these buildings. If not check out the homepage of BIG – you might be surprised…

3XN - örestad gymnasium

this is wheter an office building nor a shopping centre – it’s a school… have a look at 3XNs homepage in the link category…

(inside it’s even better – hopefully I get to see this in my time here)

Roland Rainer is here too…

A small Gallery show’s some of Roland Rainers chairs. Even if it’s very small it seems to me as a privilege if you think on Arne Jacobsen and his chairs which are spread over the whole city (…of course his buildings as well…) and the famous Danish Design more general. On the table in the back stands a shy label that says: Roland Rainer – Möbel Kollektion

Fødselsdag – Birthday

As it is tradition to celebrate birthdays with a cosy breakfast here at VLK, my whole corridor stood right in front of my room at 7:00am in the morning singing and waving danish flags. Really Cool – Thank you!

Weblinks

I’ll try to keep you informed about interesting topics concerning copenhagen. On the right side of this blog you’ll find “architecture links”. One is copenhagenX, a site about new things happening in copenhagen. And the other one is the DAC, the Danish Architecture Centre. (Both are available in English)

Global Warming

As the Danish people seem to have another sense of responsibility concerning Global Warming (Probably because of its proximity to the pole and its location to the sea – sorry!) it’s still very cold up here. Might be the reason for a really hard cold. But it’s nice having a cold abroad in a nice 12m² room. These are the real experiences!!!

Wiener Schnitzel for the Danes!!!

Here at the VLK dorm they use to cook from Mandag to Torsdag at 7pm in turns for each other. So you need to cook twice a month – they call it Food Club!

To complete my first week here at the VLK dorm I made some Viennese Schnitzel for my dorm mates!!! Believe me or not – they enjoyed it!!!

That’s my room

Finally I moved in at the VLK dorm in Copenhagen. As I figured out I’m really lucky with this room. Other Internationals are spread over the whole city and pay much more for their rooms. As they assign these rooms by first come first served principle I might have been fast enough to snatch this room. I love the rational Danish design.
